Hamlin, PA - Florida's Charlie Bodine Triumphs In Two Slingshot Headliners To Showcase A Ten Feature Hamlin Speedway Race Card
By: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
The splendid warm rays of summer sunshine latched onto the Pocono Mountain landscape this week and set the stage for another great weekend at the Hamlin Speedway as Promoters Denise and Randy Smith ushered in their sixteenth edition of the 2013 racing season at Hamlin and another fabulous night of racing entertainment. The standing room only crowd was treated to another all-out display of daredevil, seek out the cushion activity from the 133 racers that came to do battle on Saturday evening. The eye-popping exciting show was checkered for the final event at 10:45 PM. For the fourth time this season the winged warriors of the 270 Sprints went wingless once their regular feature card was completed on an evening once again presented by S&S Speedways for indoor go karts.
When the final scorecards were tallied it was former Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania resident now residing in the State of Florida Charlie Bodine showing his tailpipe to a talented field of combatants to capture both ends of the All Star Slingshot feature headliners. Joel Smith continues to raise the bar as he sped to his eighth win of the season in the Brodheadsville Chevrolet Stage One Modified Division. Also claiming wins in the star studded events included "The A-Team" Brandon Azzalina as he captured his first win of the season in the Wingless 600 Sprint main. "The Icon" Pat Bealer added another notch to his gun belt with his fifth win of the season in the Winged 270 Sprint main. "The 38 Special" Jared LaBagh kept his racer out front all of the way to claim his tenth win of the season at Hamlin in the Junior Slingshots while "The Oxford Express" Dale Kober would not be denied as he raced to his fourth win of the season in the Super Slinger finale. "The Fire Girl" Mallory Prince put all of the pieces in place to claim her first win of the season in the Rookie 270 Sprint and in doing so becoming the fifth female racer to claim a feature event win in the exciting division. Spencer Mease was handed the lead when early leader Corey Ziegler broke and Mease made the most of it as he sped to victory in the Rookie Wingless 600 feature event. Zack Bealer matched up with a win just like his father did as he made it a Bealer Boys night with a win in the Wingless 270 Sprint nightcap.
The show kicked off with a strong series of quickly paced time trials followed by some hard hitting heat action that established the feature lineups for the main events that were to follow. The feature events were all excellent runs and the "stars of tomorrow" Junior Slingshot drivers continue to excel with each turn of the steering wheel. Jared LaBagh jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag and attacked the race track as he sped away from the rest of the field. LaBagh clicked off some laps in the 13.9 second range to step away from second place man Damon Paul and go on to record a two second plus victory, his tenth of the season at Hamlin. Damon was second in a fine run with Matt Henneforth third, Alex Yankowski fourth and Tyler Peet rounding out the top five. The second five was headed up by Ryan Quackenbush with Collin DuBois, Daniel Morgiewicz, Paul Tigue and Chloe Andreas completing the top ten finishers.
"The Carbondale Comet" Paul Ennes raced into the lead in turn two at the start of the Brodheadsville Chevrolet Stage One Modified main event as he outhustled Collin DuBois for the point. DuBois kept the pressure on Ennes as the battle behind the lead pair quickly became a battle for supremacy. Emerging from a six lap tussle in the pack was defending track champion Joel Smith as he was able to break free and quickly close the distance on the leaders. Smith worked hard to slip past DuBois and then went after Ennes. Smith was able to find the baseline of the speedway to his liking and raced alongside of Ennes for two laps until lap-14 when he finally was able to secure the point. With a couple of laps remaining, the rental car of Troy Langendoerfer chased down Smith to make it close but Smith would capture yet another victory at the Hamlin Speedway for the 2013 season. Langendoerfer enjoyed a solid run as he drove from seventh to second with Paul Ennes, John Comandini and Jeff Hineline nailing down top five finishes. Collin DuBois, Pat Bealer, Will Casazza and Shannon Smith completed the field of cars when the checkered flag fell.
The held over event from July 27th for the All Star Slingshots had "Double J" Jimmy Johnston out front for the first five laps before he gave way to the high flying Charlie Bodine. Bodine had himself a quick racer under him as he clicked off some 13.7 second laps to hold the field at bay. Johnston stayed close but was soon dealing with "The Rockaway Rocket" Danny Buccafusca and "The Tornado" Tyler Johnston. On lap-14 Tyler Johnston saw his bid fall by the wayside with mechanical problems. Bodine was up to task as he raced to his first victory of the season with Jimmy Johnston in the runner-up role, Buccafusca in third, Jesse Benke in a great run for fourth and Trevor LaBagh doing some great work to finish fifth. The second five was headed up by Tyler Pirone, Wes Hearn, Mack Brink, Mike Fogler and Tommy Vroom Jr.
The rookie 600 Sprints found newcomer Corey Ziegler and Spencer Mease making up the front row of sixteen starters and Ziegler grabbed the lead into turn one and held it through the first five laps when his racer stopped in turn number one. Spencer Mease inherited the lead on the restart and the field would get one lap in until Brody Adamsky climbed the jersey barriers on the backstretch and launched into a spectacular series of end over flips and coming to rest at the pit entrance. Adamsky was uninjured in the scary incident. On the restart it would be Mease controlling the point with Kyle Rutledge finding some racing room on the top of the speedway to hustle into the runner-up slot and go after Mease. While Rutledge was able to get close it was Spencer Mease racing to his first win of the season with Rutledge a close second, Amber Oraschin in third, Mackenzie Harper in fourth and current point leader Cody Coons settling for a fifth place finish. Kyle Rode overcame a heat race flip to come back and head up the second five with Cody Smith, Gary Dennis and newcomer Jeremy Guistwite completing the field of cars running at the finish. After the checkered flag fell Cody Smith found himself skyward in a series of flips on the homestretch that continued into turn one. Smith was uninjured in the mishap.
The 270 Sprint rookie main event saw Brandon Azzalina hop behind the wheel of one of the Elite Pool Service entries and go searching for a win in the division. Azzalina found the hot rod to his liking as he led the event with Mallory Prince keeping stride with him as they charged around the speedway. It appeared Azzalina had the hot seat but as the white flag flew the racer sputtered a bit and Azzalina tried desperately to keep the car in front. Down the backstretch, Prince pulled even and took command of the event in turn three and raced to the checkered flag and her first win of the 2013 racing season. Paul Richards Jr and Brittany Erlsten also slipped Azzalina, who was credited with fourth place and Mike Kalman placed fifth. Jenna Weidner, Alex Shaffer, Scott Rupp and Jack Hanna completed the field of racers.
The 270 Sprint headliner found "The J-Shot" Jacob Hendershot and Pat Bealer heading up the front row with Hendershot getting the jump on Bealer when the green flag came out. The event settled in to a three car battle as "TK" Tommy Kunsman quickly made it a high flying threesome. Bealer went high and low to dislodge the youngster Hendershot but Hendershot remained glued to the raceway and held off each bid Bealer threw at him. The white flag was displayed and Hendershot still hung lead but as the leaders raced down the backstretch disaster struck Hendershot as his machine lost power allowing Bealer to slip past him and eke out his fifth win of the season. Hendershot was helpless but an assist from Kunsman pushed him over the line in second place with Kunsman in third place, Nunzi Allegrucci in fourth and Gene Burd rallying for a fifth place finish. Zack Bealer headed up the second five with Robbie Watson, Sydney Prince, Bobby Butler and Larry Hoagland completing the top ten.
Super Slinger action found Dale Kober getting the jump on the field at the start of the event. Richie VanOrden and Kevin Olver followed Kober's trail in second and third with newcomer Sean Familetti finding a good line to race into fourth place. Kober had more than enough power to hold the field at bay as he went on to capture his fourth win of the season with VanOrden, Olver, Familetti and Roger Collins completing the top five placers. Wes Hearn, Jimmy Johnston, Del Howell, Charlie Shaver and John Gilroy completed the top ten.
The 600 Wingless Sprint main found Brandon Azzalina and Eddie Strada squaring off at the start of the event with Azzalina winning the battle into turn one. A couple of laps into the feature found Strada spinning out of turn four and Joseph Smith with nowhere to go making contact with him. Both cars were able to restart at the back of the pack. Brandon Azzalina had himself a quick race car as he was able to dip below the 13 second mark for a lap with Tommy Kunsman now in second place and remaining close as the laps clicked off. Some good solid racing behind the leaders found Kurt Bettler and Kyle Rohner racing into contention. This would be a night for the "A-Team" Azzalina as he raced to his first win of the season with Kunsman hanging tough in the runner-up role, Bettler in third, Rohner in fourth and Robbie Hocker competing the top five. The second five found Jordan Tittle, Stephen Reynolds, Colin White, Aaron Henneforth and Eddie Strada competing the top ten.
Seizing command of the event in turn two, Charlie Bodine was the ultimate driving machine as he built up a strong early lead in the nightcap for the All Star Slingshots. A few early skirmishes found a handful of contenders falling to the wayside but Bodine was unscathed as he sought out his second victory of the evening. By the midway point of the event Bodine was on cruise control but that soon changed as Danny Buccafusca found the fast line and began to reel in Bodine. Buccafusca ate up the distance between them and with a couple of laps remaining the drivers ran nose to tail. Bodine must have listened to the late Philadelphia DJ Georgie Woods who coined the phrase "If its nice, we'll do it twice" as the veteran campaigner Bodine sped to his second win of the evening. Buccafusca, the point leader coming into the event, raced to second place with Tyler Johnston in third, Tommy Vroom Jr in fourth and Trevor LaBagh getting another top five finish. John Pantis, Jimmy Johnston, Mike Fogler, Mack Brink and Jeff Cosgrove would complete the top ten.
The 270 Wingless Sprint main proved to be the Zack Bealer Show as he grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag and led all twenty laps on his way to victory, his second of the season in wingless competition. Jacob Hendershot ,who also has two wins going wingless, was in contention in the early portion of the event but fell to the wayside with mechanical woes. Robbie Watson, who has experienced numerous engines of his own in 2013, found some magic to complete the event in a solid runner-up role. Paul Richards Jr was third with first-time driver Jonathan Swift grabbing up fourth place and Scott Rupp completing the top five.
Heat racing action at Hamlin continued to fuel the fires that have made Hamlin Speedway the place to be on Saturday nights as the Junior Slingshot heat found Jared LaBagh in victory lane. Collin DuBois captured the Brodheadsville Chevrolet Stage One Modified heat. The two heats for the Super Slingers Dale Kober and Kevin Olver recording wins. Nick Corazzi and Mackenzie Harper were victorious in the Rookie 600 Sprints heats. Alyssa Fogel was the quick timer for the Rookie 270 Sprints with a 11.907 second clocking around the speedway. Brandon Azzalina proved early on he had a quick race car as he outhustled everyone to nail down the quick time in the Wingless 600 Sprints with a 11.831 second time. "The Big Unit" Randy Johnston stopped the clocks at 13.929 seconds to claim top time for the All Star Slingshots and Pat Bealer raised many eye brows with a very fast 11.422 second lap in the 270 Sprints.
Newcomers or returning racers to the Hamlin Speedway for the Saturday night racing action included Jonathan Swift who enjoyed a solid night in his first appearance at the speedway. Jeremy Guistwite, a strong runner in the X-Cel Modified Series, made his first Hamlin start and while his car seemed to suffer from handling problems he was a gentleman at all times as he moved to the side when the leaders placed him a lap down in the event in a true show of sportsmanship. A tough break for Josh Bok during the evening as his racer never did take a lap throughout the evening of racing. Alex Shaffer, Jack Hanna and Brittany Erlsten all returned to action in the Rookie 270 division. Grady Johnston suffered major problems in hot laps and was through for the evening. Bob Wilson made his first appearance of the season and encountered troubles early on in the Super Slinger events. Alan Howell was in action for the first time in quite some time in the Super Slingers. Shelby Ogozaly suffered another upside down night as for the second week in a row found herself at the wrong place at the wrong time in executing a tip over in heat racing action.
There was a somber note during the evening as longtime sponsor of the S&S Speedways racers and a staunch supporter of racing at Hamlin, "Tireman" Marvin Eidem passed away in the morning after a long battle with cancer. A moment of silence was held in his memory. Kim Rutledge was on hand for the evening and did her usual great rendition of the National Anthem.
